portrait: Charlie Kalogeros-ChattanCharlie Kalogeros-Chattan has been a librarian for 35 years, and has served as director of the Los Alamos County Library System in Los Alamos, NM, since 2001. She is a past president of the New Mexico Municipal Librarians Association, and has served as chair of the New Mexico Library Association's Intellectual Freedom Committee.

Prior to moving to New Mexico and becoming a public librarian, Charlie served for many years as a law librarian in Massachusetts and Minnesota, and counted judges, attorneys, state prison inmates and Cuban refugees among her clientele. She was very active in the American Association of Law Libraries, serving as Chair of the Social Responsibilities Special Interest Section.

Charlie has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Tufts University, Medford, MA, and a Master of Arts degree from the Graduate Library School at the University of Chicago.

She is also a published poet.

In 2008 she initiated an annual assessment meeting for academic libraries in the North Texas area. Her assessment and process improvement activities at UNT are informed by twenty years spent in management, training and consulting roles in the IT industry, primarily at EDS (now HP Enterprise Services). It was here that she learned the critical importance of listening to the voice of the user. She has also been Head of Reference at SMU's Fondren Library.
